Bulbophyllum is probably the largest genus in the orchid family. With more than 2,000 species, it is also one of the largest genera of flowering plants, which is abbreviated in the trade journals as Bulb. This genus was first described by Louis-Marie Aubert DU PETIT-THOUARS, describing 17 Bulbophyllum species from Madagascar. The scientific name has been derived from the Latin word bulbus (bulb-like) and the Greek word phyllon (leaf), referring to the pseudobulbs on top of which the leaf is growing.

The center of diversity of this genus is in the Montane forests of Papua New Guinea (more than 600 species), which seems to be the evolutionary homeland though the genus is pantropical and widespread occurring in Australia, Southeast Asia (with over 200 species in Borneo), India, Madagascar (with 135 species, some endemic), Africa and in tropical central and South America.
Many of the Bulbophyllums have been described several times, so it is not clear how many species really exist: every year new ones are found or described. In the beginning Bulbophyllum and Cirrhopetalum were treated differently. Bulbophyllum has the flowers alternating on the flower spike while in the genus Cirrhopetalum, all flowers derive from one point. In the following years there were several genera split and described: Cirrhopetalum, Hapalochilus, Hyalosema, Mastigion, Megaclinium, Rhytionanthos and Trias. Nowadays they are all considered to be Bulbophyllum.

Bulbophyllum have creeping rhizomes, which can be very short or grow 3-6 cm long. The size of the plants reach from a few millimeter up to the really big ones, which have a leaf length of about 2m. The richdom in colours of these easy growing plants and the huge diversity in shape has created fans for Bulbophyllums all over the world.

A few of the Bulbophyllums are pollinated through flesh flies being attracted by their awful smell. Since these stories spread, many people think that the members of this genera smell bad when in fact there are a only few with a really awful smell. Bulbophyllum beccarii, which has such an awful odour that it could not be painted due to the artists fading away at a time, when photography was not invented maybe the winner. However, most of the Bulbophyllums do not smell especially the members which were once grouped to Cirrhopetalum, Hapalochilus, Hyalosema, Mastigion, Megaclinium, Rhytionanthos and Trias.

Most of the Bulbophyllums are very easy growing with only a few requiring higher humidity or being sensitive in other ways. They need no special treatment to produce flowers with just a few of them developing flowers on mature bulbs. The flowers are short lived, 1-2 weeks being the average, but quite a few produce many spikes per bulb, or reproduce flowers on the same flower spike. Due to the long rhizomes, the Bulbophyllums should be potted in flat bowls, and shoots going over the edge can be bent back into the potting material. A flowering size division should have 3-4 mature pseudobulbs plus, a new growth in order to produce flowers during their next period.
