Transparent or clear pots are not compulsory for orchids. Whilst clear pots are exposed to sun light and humidity, algae and moss can grow inside the pot. These have a negative influence on the formation of roots and the growth of the orchid in general.
Also, clear pots that are exposed to day light, will break after 3 or 4 years.
However, transparent pots are popular in orchid cultivation since they allow you to monitor the humidity and the formation of roots. You can enjoy the advantage of the clear pots and avoid the disadvantages by putting the transparent put into an opaque plastic pot or into a cachepot. This prevents algae and moss and you can still have a look at your orchid through the transparent pot.
